District 200 to discuss controversial Senate bill

Wheaton Warrenville Unit District 200 officials are encouraging community members to attend one of two information sessions to learn more about Senate Bill 16.

"This is real and it's serious and it could be devastating to our district," said Erica Loiacono, director of public relations.

The first session is scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 29, at Monroe Middle School, 1855 Manchester Road, Wheaton. Anyone unable to attend Wednesday's gathering can hear the same message at 7 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 13, at Hubble Middle School, 3S600 Herrick Road, Warrenville.

Loiacono said the forum will be set up much like the district's recent Engage200 community engagement sessions.

The night will begin with a 15- to 20-minute presentation about the bill, which attempts to reduce disparities among Illinois school districts by directing more state money to poorer districts, at the expense of wealthier ones.

If the bill passes in its current state, District 200 will lose an estimated $9.8 million, phased in over four years.

Officials say District 200 would face the second-largest reduction of any district in DuPage County and the fifth-largest reduction in the state.

Attendees will then have a series of five questions to answer at their table, including how they heard about the bill, what additional information they would like to know about it and if they think other people in the community are aware of it.
