Listing of the week

Thanks to an unexpected move out of state by the new owners, this idyllic cottage, built in 1943 and located overlooking Tower Lake, is back on the market after only a year.

John Glenn of Coldwell Banker Residential in St. Charles, the listing agent, said the owners are an empty-nester couple and the husband is a global executive who relocated from England last year.

The husband fell in love with the views of the Barrington area that he would see from the plane when landing at O'Hare International Airport, so the couple and Glenn looked all over the Barrington area last year for that “perfect house.”

Tower Lakes, in particular, delighted them because it reminded them of their home in the rolling countryside near the Yorkshire Dales. Life, however, is unpredictable and they are now forced to leave the home that they have lovingly upgraded.

The picturesque cottage features a bright gourmet kitchen with stainless steel appliances and granite countertops which, along with the dining room and the tiered deck, offers spectacular lake views. A screened porch overlooks the wooded lot.

The main floor boasts a large living room with wood-burning fireplace, dining room, sitting room and kitchen. The family room is located in the full, finished basement. Two bedrooms are located on the second floor and one on the main level.

Hardwood floors abound throughout the home, as do vaulted ceilings and skylights. There is also a two-car garage.

Glenn offers further details:

What is this home's hidden gem?

“A stunning view, an excellent school district, and a great location, just minutes from exciting bars and restaurants … the perfect place.”

What would your perfect buyer look like?

“This classic home in its wonderful environs offers wide appeal, from professional singles to empty-nesters to families searching for a fantastic place to raise their children.

“The house features bright open spaces flowing both internally and externally with an unrestricted view of the charming Tower Lake, which offers stunning year-round views. Whether commuting, working from home or retired, this home makes an excellent retreat for peaceful relaxation and entertaining alike.”

What is the coolest thing about living in this neighborhood?

“This home is situated on a nearly half-acre, sloped wooded lot with spectacular lake and tree views in a stunning lakeside community with no through access. Tower Lakes is a little-known treasure of a lakeside community with classic homes on gently flowing hillsides — quite unique for the Chicago area. Originally developed in the 1920s as a recreational summer home community, the village is centered on two scenic private lakes, totaling over 85 acres. The lakes and heavily wooded rolling hills continue to attract recreation-oriented and nature-loving residents. The owners association promotes neighborly living and hosts activities year round, including swimming, boating and tennis. The village contains just over 400 single-family homes but no commercial buildings and is part of the award-winning Barrington Community Unit School District 220. Frequent commuter rail service is available from the Barrington station and nearby shopping is plentiful.”

Which television or movie personality can you picture living in this home?

“Judi Dench — a classy home for a classy lady.”

“Red Oak, White Oak and Spruce (trees).”

The house features bright open spaces that flow and offer unrestricted views of Tower Lake.
This view of Tower Lake is seen from many of the home's rooms.
