Peoria County grand jury indicts man in attack

WEST PEORIA - A Peoria County grand jury has indicted a Chicago man who authorities say assaulted his pregnant girlfriend and then attacked sheriff's deputies during his arrest.

The (Peoria) Journal Star reports 28-year-old George Jernigan faces up to seven years in prison if convicted of attempting to disarm a peace officer and aggravated battery.

Twenty-five-year-old Brenda Banks tells police Jernigan came home drunk and shoved her into walls. She says she grabbed a knife for protection during the confrontation and her boyfriend was cut during the struggle.

Authorities say he pushed a deputy and tried and tried to grab one of their guns as they escorted him from the building. They say he also tried to flee.

Online court records didn't indicate an attorney for Jernigan.
