Stevenson's Radtke making an impact at NIU

Lake County girls volleyball fans saw former Stevenson standout Jenna Radtke collect plenty of blocks at the net during her career as a Patriot.

So it should come as no surprise that for the second time in her collegiate career, Radtke has been honored for her defensive prowess.

The Northern Illinois sophomore was named the Mid-American Conference's West Division defensive player of the week. She also earned the selection on the week of Nov. 11, 2013.

Radtke is the third Huskie to win the defensive honor this year.

She led the NIU defense in victories over Eastern Michigan and Central Michigan.

Between the two matches, Radtke posted 11 blocks and 8 digs to go along with 23 kills, a .526 attack percentage and 3 service aces.

• Lewis senior libero Amy Choi (Vernon Hills) collected 25 digs in the Flyers' hard fought 25-22, 25-23 25-23 over Williams Jewell.

And her performance did not go unnoticed by Flyer coach Lorelee Smith.

"William Jewell never gives up and it shows how much they love volleyball," Smith said on the school's website. "It became tough at times to score points but we found a way. Amy Choi made it equally as hard for them to get kills."

Choi accounted for more than a third of Lewis' 74 digs in the match.

It was the Flyers' 13th sweep of the season and gave them their tenth Great Lakes Valley Conference victory of the season. The Flyers (18-5, 10-3) now have nine consecutive seasons of 10 or more GLVC wins.

Choi also had 30 digs in a 3-1 GLVC loss at Rockhurst this past Sunday.

Women's soccer

Hope College goalie Kat Dickson (Grayslake Central) has been selected the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association defensive player of the week for games played through Oct. 25. The senior extended her streak of consecutive minutes without allowing a goal to 495 as the Flying Dutch clinched a share of the MIAA championship. Dickson, who leads the MIAA in goals-against average (0.35 in league play), is being honored as player of the week for the first time this season and second time in her career.

Women's golf

Illinois sophomore Stephanie Miller (Stevenson) was selected the Big Ten co-Golfer of the Week as she helped the Illini to a victory at the Hoosier Fall Invitational.

Miller shared the honor with Hannah Kim of Northwestern.

Freshman Dana Gattone (St. Viator) also earned the Golfer of the Week award during the first week of the fall season.

Gattone was the first Illini to receive the recognition since Miller did so during the 2013-14 fall campaign.

Miller shot a 72 during Friday's round of stroke play in the Hoosier Fall Invitational to determine the match play seedings for the remainder of the tournament. The even-par round tied Miller for second place in the individual standings.

In the first round of match play, Miller faced off against Boston College's Jocelyn Chia and was able to pick up the deciding point on the 18th hole.

"Stephanie posted a very good round during stroke play qualifying in challenging conditions," said Illini coach Renee Slone on a release from the school. "Her 2-under par 34 on the back nine was impressive in the wind.

"Her determination and will to win were key elements in her matches as she birdied the 18th hole twice - once to win a match outright and another to square the match and send it to extra holes."

Through four fall tournaments, Miller has carded three even-par rounds in addition to holding one of the top two spots for the Illini in each competition.

Before the season began Miller was tabbed as one of the Big Ten players to watch.

Miller and the Illini will look to push the team's winning streak to three as they prepare for the final tournament of the fall - the Jim West Challenge in Boerne, Texas, to be held Nov. 2-4.

• North Central sophomore Paige Candra (Palatine) competed in six events at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin Championship with a 95.3 stroke average. She placed 28th and recorded a season-best score of 88 in the first round. The Cardinals placed third in the tourney.

Men's soccer

Among the defensive stalwarts for Augustana have been junior Adam Witucki (Libertyville) as the Vikings are 10-5-1 on the season and 2-2-1 in the College Conference Illinois & Wisconsin.

• Kentucky sophomore midfielder Matthew Quick (Hersey) is a key member of one of the top three defensive units in the nation.

Only Syracuse has allowed fewer goals than the Wildcats, who have defeated three top 20 teams this season, including Notre Dame, which was ranked No. 1 at the time.

Quick has started every game, played over 1,400 minutes and has 2 assists.

• Oakton freshman forward Nelson Herrera (Maine West) was selected to the NJCAA Region IV First Team.

Named to the second team was freshman defender Ramon Contreras (Maine West) and freshman forward Alex Herrera (Maine West).

All three were Skyway Conference first team all-conference selections while sophomore defender Joshua DeLeon was named to the second team.

Football

Augustana junior quarterback Sam Frasco (Prospect) rushed for 146 yards and 3 touchdowns in a 31-26 win at Carthage.

On the year, Frasco leads the Vikings with 526 yards and 9 touchdowns on 116 rushing attempts

Carthage quarterback Nick Anzelmo (Schaumburg) completed 24-of-56 passes for 256 yards and 2 touchdowns in the game.

• Austin Peay State University freshman quarterback Mickey Macius, a native of Arlington Heights, was named Ohio Valley Conference Co-Newcomer of the Week after helping lead Austin Peay to a 20-13 victory against Murray State.

It ended the Football Championship Subdivision's longest active losing streak at 18 games.

Macius shared the award with Eastern Illinois quarterback Jalen Whitlow.

Macius, making only his second career start, completed 18-of-22 passes for 201 yards and 3 touchdowns as the Governors won their first game since Nov. 17, 2012.

His 81.8 completion percentage marked the first time an APSU quarterback had been above 80 percent since the 2003 season when the Govs were playing non-scholarship football.
