STEM Cafe looks at physics of football

Northern Illinois University invites you to its next STEM Cafe, "Even More Physics of Football," from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28, at the Fireside Grille, 49 Sugar Lane in Sugar Grove.

Newton's laws describe football players on the field just as well as carts on a track or balls rolling down ramps. Physics professor and armchair quarterback Mike Eads will discuss how an understanding of velocity, momentum, force, impulse, collisions, conservation laws, and even air resistance can lead to some interesting insights on the game.

Join the monthly STEM Cafés. They are fun, casual gatherings where adults can eat, drink, and chat with STEM professionals about the latest scientific research. These events are free. Food and drinks are available for purchase from the host restaurant.

The next program will be "The 3-D Printing Revolution!" from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 18, at Eduardo's, 214 E. Lincoln Hwy., DeKalb. Advancements in 3-D printing are making it possible for researchers and average folks to print everything from car parts to body parts. How does additive manufacturing actually work and how is it going to change your life?
