Seven area homeowners win 'Painted Ladies' contest

Seven area homeowners have earned top honors in the Chicago's Finest Painted Ladies & Her Court competition, an exterior painting contest.

Elgin homeowners Chris and Rebecca Berry have been named Grand Prize winners. Their DuPage Street home won in the Best Use of a Bold Color category, and was painted by Jay's Painting of Batavia.

This is the 28th year of the Painted Ladies completion, sponsored by Schaumburg-based Chicago Paint & Coatings Association.

The style, size or age of the property is not a factor in selecting the winners, but

beauty and craftsmanship of the paint application, and how well it complements the structure of the building, is essential to being selected a winner, said Bill Heiden, the association's Publicity Committee chairman.

Heiden works with a team of judges to select winners among contest entrants living around Chicago and Northwest Indiana. The seven homeowners were honored at an awards dinner Thursday, Oct. 23, at Maggiano's restaurant in Schaumburg.

This year's ceremony featured Mark Knaebe, a wood surface chemist and natural resources specialist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Knaebe presentation for many professional painters in attendance focused on wood and finishes and challenges they pose, including the best way to prep wood for paint and stain.
