Work continues at Lombard Metra station

Workers had mild weather on their side this week as they kept moving steadily along with construction at the Lombard Metra station.

An extensive makeover is ongoing at the station, which will include the addition of canopies on platforms, new retaining walls and a pedestrian underpass. Work is scheduled to be complete next spring.

A Metra spokeswoman said the east half of the platform already has been demolished, and workers are currently working on driving steel sheet piles into the ground in preparation for the setting of new walls.

Village officials said the current work involves machinery that causes significant vibration. Commuters and residents have been told not to be alarmed with the vibration, as the contractor is monitoring it and its impact on nearby structures.

There are no planned interruptions to train service due to the construction for now.

Work will continue throughout the winter on the nearly $8 million project. The tunnel - which is part of a series of safety upgrades along the Union Pacific West Line - will be located just east of Park Avenue.
