Illinois names 2014 Senior Hall of Fame inductees

A 92-year-old man who earned three degrees and wrote six books and a 69-year-old inventor are among those inducted into Illinois' Senior Hall of Fame.

The Department on Aging announced the 2014 inductees in a Thursday news release.

Director John Holton says the inductees' accomplishments have made Illinois a better place to live.

Among the inductees is Alvin "Al" Lopinot of Litchfield. After serving in World War II, the 92-year-old went on to write books and earn degrees in biology, botany and chemistry.

Walter Voyt of Plainfield developed several patents during his career with Amoco Chemical Company. He studied how sunlight caused skin cancer - research that helped develop sunscreens.

The Illinois Legislature created the Hall of Fame in 1994 to honor Illinois residents age 65 and older.
