Search in serial killing case comes up empty

Authorities who learned that a man who confessed to killing several women whose bodies were found in abandoned buildings in Indiana may have traveled to the South suburbs say their search of abandoned homes in the area has come up empty.

The Cook County sheriff's office started searching abandoned homes on Wednesday and continued on Thursday. In an email, a department spokeswoman says that about a dozen vacant buildings in Markham and Hazel Crest were searched.

Darren Vann is suspected of killing seven women, including six whose bodies were found in abandoned houses in Gary, Indiana. Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart says his office conducted the searches after Indiana authorities provided information that indicated Vann may have visited the area recently.
