Harper advances to regional final

A 30th-minute penalty kick from Alex Freeman provided all the scoring needed for the Harper College men's soccer team to advance in the postseason as the visiting Hawks (8-5-2) eliminated No. 2 seed Triton College 1-0 on Wednesday.

Freeman got his chance after a foul was committed against Harper freshman Elliot Lara.

The goal was Freeman's fourth of the postseason, and gives him 7 goals for the year. Goalkeeper Irvin Velazquez stopped 6 shots to earn the shutout, giving him 5 clean sheets this season.

The win advances the Hawks to Saturday's NJCAA Division III, Region IV championship game. In the other semifinal number No. 5 seed Rock Valley defeated top seed Joliet Junior College (3-2).

As the highest remaining seed, Harper will host the regional final.
