Orchestra plans anniversary performance

In honor of the Fox Valley Academy of Music Performance's 10th anniversary, the Philharmonic Orchestra will perform a celebration of musical anniversaries. The concert program, "Happy Anniversary!" includes selections or composers that are celebrating an anniversary.

According to Music Director Maryann Flock, the year 2014 commemorates several musical and historical moments.

When the Philharmonic had its debut, Dvorak's symphony, "From the New World" was the chosen masterpiece. The Philharmonic honors its anniversary by performing Dvorak's treasured symphony in Aurora.

"When the Philharmonic debuted, it brought back the fine orchestral performances that had been absent since the demise of the Fox River Valley Symphony," stated Jason Palmer, founding music director. The Philharmonic is honored to carry on the tradition of fine orchestral performances in Aurora and throughout the Fox Valley today.

Where were you when The Who began, or the "Wizard of Oz" movie premiered? Be a part of the audience as the Philharmonic rocks out for the 50th anniversary of the formation of the British rock band The Who by performing "Pinball Wizard" from the rock opera "Tommy." For the 75th anniversary of the making of the "Wizard of Oz," the Philharmonic will play the beloved classics from Harold Arlen's magnificent score. The year 2014 is also the 200th anniversary of the writing of Francis Scott Key's "Star Spangled Banner." Beyond the "Banner," both world wars are honoring anniversaries. Enjoy the music of an English military man who arranged folk tunes which were then performed by musicians in internment camps. Finally, at the anniversary concert, Frenchman Jacques Offenbach, composer of the famous "Can Can," wrote his comedic "La Belle Helene" 150 years ago. Helen of Troy has never been funnier. Feel the energy of the Philharmonic as we celebrate its 10th anniversary, and hear an eclectic mix of old and new.

The concert is at 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 26, at 27 S. Edgelawn Drive, Aurora. Admission is always free. The Philharmonic is a community orchestra sponsored by the Fox Valley Academy of Music Performance which also governs the Fox Valley Academy, and the Access to Music program for string instruction throughout East Aurora Unit District 131.
