Girls volleyball / Northwest roundup

Fremd's girls volleyball team received 8 kills from Lane Hindenburg and 7 from Ysabel Lee en route to a 25-16, 25-23 victory at Buffalo Grove in Tuesday's Mid-Suburban League second-place crossover.

Maisie Koo added 4 kills and a block for the Vikings, who raised their record to 23-6.

Carly Roberts handed out 29 assists while Jackie Mursuli added 10.

Aubrey Stegich produced 18 digs in the back row, followed by Sarah Roberts (13) and Hindenburg (12).

BG was led on attack by Sara Biesiadecki (5 kills), Monica Browne (5), Alicia Kantor (4) and Kanela Kalyviaris (2) as they took their cues from setter Marie Georgoulis.

Palatine d. Wheeling: Heather Holz (9 kills), Jess Lundell (5) and Aliana Mikkelsen (2) were top attackers for visiting Palatine (20-9) in a 25-14, 25-19 triumph.

Sydney Christensen handed out 15 assists while Alyssa Kronberg was 11-of-12 serve receiving with 8 digs. Meg Angelaccio was 10-of-10 on serve receive with 10 digs.

Michaela Vasey and Deanna Kuzmanic each had 3 kills for Wheeling (13-17), whose setter Sabrina Semeria collected 6 assists. Alex Laureano had 19 digs.

Prospect d. Barrington: Michelle Haaning handed out 24 assists as Prospect posted a 25-23, 25-19 victory in its final home match of the season.

Leading the Knights attack were Kaeli Myers (8 kills), Maggie Porwit (7), Catherine Sherwood (4), Sammy Withey (3) and Brenda Kendziera (3).

Haaning and Rachael Grippo each had 6 digs while Nikki Matters had 5.

"Our girls played well," said Knights coach Gabrielle Lovin. "Maggie Porwit set the tone with energy and hard work. She was our fire starter. We started the season off with a home win and ended with a win in our last home game.

"It feels good to see the girls starting to understand how becoming one unit and working together make a huge difference. I love to coach because of players like the ones I have on my team. It was a good victory against a tough Barrington squad."

Elk Grove d. Hoffman Estates: Amber Lindfors put down 10 kills with 4 blocks and Cheryl Wickstrom added 6 kills for Elk Grove in a 25-20, 25-16 victory.

Alex Masnica handed out 15 assists while Tayler Merkel had 20 digs for the host Grens (6-22).

Kelsey Warford put down 3 kills while Kaitlyn Imburgia had 2 for the Hawks (3-31).

Nazareth d. St. Viator: Nazareth defeated visiting St. Viator 25-18, 25-9 in Lyons.

The Lions (20-13-1) were led on attack by Grace Fedus, who had 5 kills. Setter Kaitlin O'Brien handed out 8 assists.
