Score this one in favor of Mundelein

Mundelein's soccer team has had its problems scoring goals this season. The Mustangs had lost three of their last four games by 1-0 scores.

In their Class 3A regional opener Tuesday night, the Mustangs saw their scoring frustrations continue - until the second half.

The Mustangs exploded for three goals and ended No. 10 Round Lake's season with a 3-0 victory at Libertyville.

Mason Homsey, Jesus Alba and Armando Gomez scored for No. 7 Mundelein, which will face second-seeded Libertyville at 4 p.m. Saturday.

"When our boys can finish, it gives us a far better chance," Mundelein coach Ernie Billittier said. "We always produce chances, but the trick is to score. Our guys are very resilient, especially after some tough loses.

"Our guys did a nice job training over the last week," Billitier added. "As a group, they decided what they needed to focus on."

It took until the 49th minute for the Mustangs to net their first goal. Gomez hit a low cross and Homsey finished it for a 1-0 lead.

"I really didn't have an angle to shoot," said Gomez, who has 19 goals and 6 assists this season. "I knew that Mason was running off me, so I sent it in and he finished it off. We were just looking for it. We knew the goal would come. We just had to keep our composure and focus until we get one."

Alba added the second goal in the 63rd minute with a header off a Hector Ruiz corner kick. The Mustangs tallied again four minutes later, as Gomez chipped the ball over the goalkeeper near the top of the box off. Lino Garcia earned the assist.

Donnie Kvien earned the cleaned sheet by making 2 stops in goal for the Mustangs.

Round Lake ended its strong season at 14-4-3. The Panthers went undefeated in the North Suburban Prairie Division.

"Mundelein has a good team," Round Lake coach Hugo Tellez said. "Their midfielders possess the ball well. They countered on their chances and they had a lot of shots."
