Girls volleyball / Lake County roundup

Grayslake Central's girls volleyball team celebrated senior night by netting its 20th win of the season Tuesday.

Senior Danielle Celeslie pounded 10 kills and served 2 aces, as the Rams defeated Woodstock 25-15, 25-6 in a Fox Valley Fox Division match. Seniors Taylor O'Neill and Berit Carlson added 6 and 4 kills, respectively, for Grayslake Central (20-14, 8-4).

Carlson and fellow senior Dani Sentz also delivered 2 aces in the win, senior Juliana Frusolone was 61-of-61 setting with 25 assists. Junior Rebecca Pimpo and senior Katie Strickland each had 8 digs.

"It was great to honor our seniors and get our 20th win on the same night," Rams coach Jason Janczak said. "Our seniors stepped up big on both offense and defense. I'm very proud of our team and especially our seniors."

Prairie Ridge d. Grayslake North: The Knights lost 25-9, 25-20 in Fox Valley Fox action.

Maggie Fish, Kayla Cupal and Nicole LeBaron each had 2 kills for the Knights, while Kendall Buchman contributed 2 aces and 4 assists. Stefani Keilwitz had 5 digs, and Char Gaunky lofted 3 assists.

Carmel d. Marian Central: Grace Schofield and Morgan had 8 and 7 kills, respectively, for the Corsairs in their 25-16, 25-22 win in Woodstock. Grace Butler added 5 kills, 8 assists and 2 blocks, and Sierra Kepski notched 10 digs, as Carmel improved to 28-5 and 5-2 in the East Suburban Catholic Conference.

The Corsairs opened up a 10-point lead thanks to great serving by Meade and all-around team play in the first game. Marian battled back and made it a 4-point game, but Carmel made a couple clutch plays and finished strong to win the first.

Game 2 was back and forth for a while before Marian made a run to take a 6-point lead.

"We were down 22-16 and I burned my final (timeout)," Carmel coach David Pazely said. "The message was, 'Forget the scoreboard and go make plays to win back momentum. No matter what happens for the rest of this game we reestablish ourselves and play aggressive.' We sided out and then Morgan served 8 straight points to steal Game 2."

Carmel visits St. Viator on Thursday and a win would earn the Corsairs a share the ESCC title.

Stevenson d. Grant: The Patriots won the North Suburban crossover 25-20, 25-12, receiving 6 kills apiece from Isabella Milejczyk and Jori Radtke.

Anna Drozdzewicz added 4 kills and 2 solo blocks for Stevenson (21-13). Corissa Kurth contributed 16 assists, 3 kills and 2 aces, while Morgan Berland led the Patriots with 7 digs. Radtke and Jackie Green also had a pair of solo blocks each.

Grant received 4 kills from Kylie Mueller, 8 digs from Kaylyn Padawang and 6 digs from Kelli Varney.

Lakes d. Warren: Megan Behrendt and McKenna Lahr each totaled double-digit kills, and the Eagles outlasted the Blue Devils 25-23, 20-25, 25-23 in a North Suburban crossover.

Behrendt rang up 15 kills, 11 digs, 2 blocks and 3 aces, while Lahr had 11 kills and 11 digs. Lakes also got 25 assists and 11 digs from Maddie Demo and 11 digs from Lisa Buehler.

Warren received 7 kills apiece from Lauren Frericks and Jenna Walczak, while Kim Hengesh had 6 kills and 5 blocks. Nicole Berzin dished out 11 assists and posted 9 digs. Frericks also served 13 of 13 with an ace, set 32 of 33 with 11 assists and notched 10 digs. Lindsey Biedron was 12-of-13 serving with an ace and pounded 6 kills. Walczak served 11 of 12 with an ace and recorded 18 digs.

Zion-Benton d. Vernon Hills: The Zee-Bees captured the North Suburban crossover 25-18, 25-19.
