Sheriff: Holiday Hills shooter ready to 'finish off' officers
Two officers who were shot while responding to a domestic disturbance in Holiday Hills last week would likely be dead if not for the heroic efforts by fellow officers, McHenry County Sheriff Keith Nygren said. Shooting suspect Scott B. Peters opened the front door and was prepared to shoot them again before another officer returned fire, he said. Hinsdale district OKs new two-year contract
Hinsdale High School District 86's school board approved a two-year contract with its teachers last night in a 4-3 vote. The board discussed the contract in closed session for an hour and considered tabling a vote until later in the week before ultimately voting and approving the agreement. Full story.
Truck driver's statements can be used in trial on I-88 crash
The statements a Hanover Park truck driver made after his semitrailer truck smashed into and killed a tollway worker and seriously injured an Illinois State trooper in January can be used against him in court, a judge ruled yesterday. Renato Velasquez is due in court again Nov. 20. Full story.
Early voting problems arise in Cook County suburbs
On the first day of early voting yesterday, problems were reported in the Northwest suburbs of Cook County. One situation involved a candidate who couldn't vote for himself or other members of his party, while other locations reported issues of wrong signatures popping up for voters who came in to cast ballots. Aurora man dies in Naperville crash
An Aurora man died from his injuries in a car crash last week in Naperville. Nikhil Siony, 45, had to be extricated from his 2008 Toyota after it was struck at the intersection of 75th Street and Book Road. He was airlifted to Advocate Good Samaritan and later died. Full story.
Lombard doctor guilty of defrauding insurance companies A Lombard dermatologist was found guilty of defrauding insurance companies by billing cosmetic treatments as precancerous lesions on the skin, officials said. Robert Kolbusz, 57, owner and operator of Center for Dermatology and Skin Cancer, Ltd., submitted false claims for more than 800 patients that equaled $2.6 million in false claims. Full story.

White Sox first baseman Jose Abreu was named the Sporting News AL Rookie of the Year yesterday. He led the major leagues with a .581 slugging percentage. He finished second in the American League with a .964 OPS (On-base Plus Slugging percentage) and 323 total bases, third with 36 home runs, fourth with 107 RBI and fifth with a .317 batting average. Rose's night big 'positive' for Bulls
The Cavs won last night's preseason tilt 107-98 in Columbus, Ohio, but the game featured a supreme symbolic victory for the Bulls. Derrick Rose from 2011 was back in the building.
