St. Charles East finishes 11th at state

St. Charles East fared much better on the second day of the Class 3A boys state golf tournament in Bloomington on Saturday.

Collectively shaving 13 shots off their first-day total, the Saints moved up one spot on the final day of the season at The Den at Fox Creek.

Gary King had 4 birdies to conclude his playing career, leading the Saints' second-day total of 314 with a 2-over 74.

Ronnie Griggs and Colin Johnson added matching 79s for St. Charles East; Daniel Haugen had an 82 for the final counting score.

"We made it down for the sixth time in the 15-year history of St. Charles East," coach John Stock said. "Our goal today was to come back and play better. We would like to play holes No. 4 through 9 over again."

The five-hole stretch ruined the Saints' opportunity for a better finish during first-round action.

For the three at-large qualifiers from the area in the field, Nicholas Huggins' 76 earned a top-50 finish for the Marmion junior.

Marmion senior Jackson Clark was 3 shots higher than Huggins' two-day 158 total, and Andrew Nelson, the first state qualifier for Batavia in eight years, had two-round scores of 85 and 84.

At the Class 1A tournament in Bloomington, Aurora Christian finished 10th.
