Chicago police union ratifies contract with city

CHICAGO - Chicago's Fraternal Order of Police has ratified a five-year contract with the city that calls for an 11 percent pay increase retroactive from July 2012.

Members of the union voted 4,755 in favor of the contract to 2,395 votes against.

The new contract comes after a paperwork mistake by now-ousted FOP President Mike Shields denied officers their automatic right to a retroactive pay raise. He failed to notify the city in 2012 he intended to terminate the police contract and commence negotiations on a new agreement.

In addition to a pay raise, the new contract commits the city to buying 400 new police vehicles; increases vacation time and prohibits the" unreasonable" denial of requests for time off.

The Chicago City Council must approve the contract.
