Endorsement: Wheeler in House 64

Voters in Illinois House District 64 are fortunate to have a choice between two well-informed candidates: Republican incumbent Barbara Wheeler and Democratic firefighter/paramedic Joel Mains, both of Crystal Lake. We endorse Wheeler for her political experience and track record. Wheeler is seeking her second term in the legislature after 10 years on the McHenry County Board. During her first term in Springfield, she won passage of a bill allowing judges to authorize GPS tracking as part of an order of protection, which stemmed from the killing of Diane Kephart of Antioch last year. Wheeler was a sponsor on a law that allows fines and asset seizure for those who promote human trafficking for prostitution. Wheeler, sister of former Republican U.S. Senate candidate Al Salvi of Wauconda and cousin of Democratic state Rep. Ann Williams of Chicago, opposes raising the $8.25 minimum wage, opposes extending the 2011 income tax increase, supports term limits for lawmakers, opposes a school funding bill that could cost many suburban schools and voted for a pension cost-cutting law now before the Illinois Supreme Court. We think Wheeler represents her district well and we endorse her for re-election on Nov. 4.
