Quinn doesn't stand by tax-extension timetable

Gov. Pat Quinn declined Tuesday to repeat his assertion, first made in an interview with the Daily Herald, that he'd try to extend the state's 2011 tax increase in the weeks after the November election. Asked directly about his timetable at Tuesday night's televised debate, Quinn said only that he's been campaigning on his plan to keep the state's 5 percent tax rate since March and will continue to do so. 3 Gavin teachers to be fired over molestation charges

The Gavin School District 37 board Tuesday moved to fire a Gavin Middle School South teacher who has been charged with molesting a student. Michael Vucic will be suspended without pay until a formal dismissal hearing is held, officials said. The board also moved to fire two other teachers who authorities have said did not report suspicions of the abuse. Full story.

Duckworth announces military retirement

Congresswoman Tammy Duckworth, who lost both legs when the Blackhawk helicopter she was piloting was shot down during combat operations in Iraq, has announced her retirement from the military. The announcement is on the heels of the 46-year-old announcing last month she is pregnant with her first child, expected in December. Full story.

Naperville man charged in Bartlett standoff

A Naperville man who barricaded himself inside a Bartlett pasta manufacturing plant faces felony charges in connection with the nearly five-hour standoff. Mark H. Armorer, 25, of the 1300 block of Old Dominion Road, was charged Tuesday with criminal damage to property, disorderly conduct and tampering with a security, fire, or life safety system at Rana Meal Solutions LLC, 550 S. Huntley man found with $42,730 in drugs, police say

The McHenry County sheriff's office said Tuesday a Huntley man who had about $42,730 worth of narcotics at his residence and in the car he was driving was arrested Oct. 8. After getting multiple tips that 20-year-old Troy Grimes was selling cannabis in southern McHenry County, the McHenry County sheriff's office Intelligence Led Policing Unit and the Illinois State Police North Central Narcotics Task Force conducted an investigation. Police seek tips in Crystal Lake 7-Eleven robbery

Crystal Lake police are seeking information about a robbery at a 7-Eleven store Tuesday, officials said. A man came into the store at 19 Berkshire Drive around 11 a.m. and approached the counter, according to a news release. Once the clerk opened the cash register for a transaction, the man grabbed cash from the register and fled, officials said. The same 7-Eleven store also was robbed Sept. 28, authorities said. Marklund expanding its school in Bloomingdale

Marklund took the next step toward expanding its Day School in Bloomingdale by breaking ground on a $4.2 million addition that focuses on students diagnosed on the autism spectrum. The future facility - dubbed the Ann Haskins Center - will allow Marklund to partner with Wheaton College to serve up to 35 more students with autism from Cook, Kane, DuPage and Lake counties. Spellman: Keith an Ironman on skates

Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville probably realizes he should be amazed that on any night, in any game, he can throw Duncan Keith out on the ice for 25 or 30 minutes - or more - and know he is going to receive an all-world performance from the Blackhawks' two-time Norris Trophy winner. Quenneville should be amazed, but after seeing the 31-year-old Keith in action all these years, he's just not. It's a given. Full story.
