Lincoln Elementary goes for the record

At a recent student council assembly at Lincoln Elementary School, the focus was on several issues including the new student council makeup, what the Pledge of Allegiance means, and information on fundraisers such as their annual food drive.

Elgin Lions Club Food Drive chairman Ed Bates spoke to the students and delivered the red collection container for them to see and spoke briefly about the Elgin Lions Club and the Community Crisis Center, the recipient of the food.

It was emphasized that the school, the Lions, and the Crisis Center are working together to help others and serve the community.

Last year, the school's goal was 2013 units and they outdid it by collecting 2142. This year's goal is 2014 units.

Karen Peterson, Kristin Bayer and Rudy Arreola are three teachers at the Hoffman Estates school who arranged the assembly, all the activities, and the food drive.

This month, the Elgin Lions Club will have been serving the Elgin area for 93 years, providing thousands of eyeglasses to Elgin area students who could not otherwise afford them as well as performing countless other charitable works such as the food drive. Later this month, the Elgin Lions Club members will be manning a water stop on Saturday, Oct. 25, at the Zombie 5K and 1-mile run that benefits the Boys and Girls Club of Elgin.

The club is interested in gaining new members so that it can do even more for the community

The club meets at 6:15 p.m. on the first Tuesday of the month at the Elgin American Legion, 820 N. Liberty St. in Elgin. For details, email Ed Bates at batesed@cod.edu. Visit www.e-clubhouse.org/sites/elginil/.
