Suburban hospitals play it safe with Ebola; one patient put in isolation

A patient placed in isolation at Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin while being assessed for the Ebola virus is not infected, hospital officials said yesterday. The only thing required to trigger such an assessment is a patient reporting flu-like symptoms and having recently traveled to Africa. Full story.

Biden plans to show in suburbs for Schneider

Vice President Joe Biden plans to join Democrats campaigning for the party's candidates as he stumps for U.S. Rep. Brad Schneider in the suburbs next week. Schneider is facing a tough rematch challenge against Republican Bob Dold in the North suburban 10th District. The race has become one of the most hotly contested in the country. Full story.

Expect a rainy start to the morning with temperatures in the mid-60s. Rain is predicted to stick around throughout the day and temperatures are forecast to drop slightly to 59 degrees by the evening. Showers could continue Wednesday and Thursday. Full story.

Traffic

Traffic is building into a slow rush hour on many suburban roadways, especially eastbound I-90 between Arlington Heights Road and I-294. Northbound I-355 also backs up between North Avenue and Lake Street, as does I-88 east between Route 25 and Eola Road. Construction projects could slow traffic on Meacham Road in Schaumburg while bridge work goes on at I-90 and on Roosevelt Road in West Chicago, among other locations. Full story.

Chicago CEO shot by employee dies of injuries

A Chicago businessman wounded in July by a disgruntled employee died yesterday. ArrowStream CEO Steven LaVoie was shot in the head and abdomen on July 31 by Tower Lakes resident Tony DeFrances, who fatally shot himself after shooting LaVoie. Full story.

Lake County investigators to be honored for baby killer case

The Lake County Major Crime Task Force investigators will accept an award today from a state organization for its role that led to the conviction of the killer of a 5-month-old Zion boy. In September, a Lake County judge sentenced Demetries Thorpe to 30 years in prison for killing the baby, Joshua Summeries. Full story.

Aerosmith guitarist visits Arlington Heights store

Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry visited Guitar Center in Arlington Heights yesterday. Pouring rain couldn't deter more than 200 fans that turned out to greet the rocker. Perry posed with fans and signed copies of his new book, "Rocks: My Life In And Out of Aerosmith." Full story with video.

Palatine artist repairing statue damaged twice in Chicago

Palatine artist Rich Greiwe has a week and a half of repair work to do after his creation to honor a fallen Chicago police officer in front of The Drake Hotel downtown was vandalized not once but twice over the weekend. The statue is one of many being displayed throughout the city this month to benefit The Chicago Police Memorial Foundation. Full story.

Batavia school district to hold forum on referendum

The Batavia school district will host a meeting tonight to discuss the idea of borrowing $15 million for buildings-and-grounds projects in advance of the upcoming advisory referendum. Some of the money would be used to put in two artificial turf fields. Full story.

The Bulls stepped up their defense after a slow start in Monday's preseason win over the Denver Nuggets at the United Center by the score of 110-90.
