Illinois legislative committee to take up fracking

Rules for hydraulic fracturing in Illinois are on the agenda for an Illinois legislative committee meeting.

The Joint Committee on Administrative Rules last month asked for more time to consider proposed rules to govern high-volume oil and gas extraction in Illinois. The Hydraulic Fracturing Regulatory Act is on the agenda for the committee's Tuesday meeting in Chicago.

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources provided the rules to the committee in late August after rewording some rules based on more than 30,000 comments on an original draft.

The panel asked the DNR to ensure the rules comply with the intent of a law passed last year after intense negotiations that included industry and environmental groups.
