Another good day for Glenbard South

There have been a lot of good days to be a Glenbard South Raider on a golf course lately, and Monday was no different.

The Raiders boys overcame the wind and occasional rain to win the Class 2A Nazareth sectional with a 309, coming in 6 strokes better than second-place Latin School at Broken Arrow Golf Course in Lockport. Lemont took third at 323.

"I'm really thrilled. We sized up the competition and we knew that there were several schools playing well," Raiders coach Scott Iliff said. "A couple of them played very well here. But the main opponent was Broken Arrow. This course can really grow teeth in the wind, and we were looking at radar all day."

Raiders junior Russell Matos won medalist honors over Latin senior Knox Montgomery by shooting par on a one-hole playoff after each shot a 73 through 18 holes.

"I hit a decent tee shot, and I was able to hit my 5-iron onto the green for par," said Matos, a repeat sectional winner.

Matos hit a 34 on the front nine, 39 on the back.

"I was hitting everything really well," added Matos, who also won a regional title last week. "I just felt really confident going into today. I hit most of my fairways, most of my greens."

Kevin Uvodich and Michael Wittenberg each added a 77, and Christopher Dufort shot an 82 to help the Raiders earn a repeat trip this weekend to Normal for the state meet, where they will be among the favorites to win the championship.

"We have a lot of unfinished business down there," Iliff said. "A lot of people have come up to me saying, You're going to win, you're going to win."

Iliff isn't taking anything for granted. Matos said he believes the team is better prepared because of last year's experience.

"I feel like we've grown as a team and gotten a lot better," said Matos, who tied for 26th at state last year as the Raiders placed sixth, "and hopefully we can do better at state, maybe even win it."
