Settlement closes last chapter in McHenry wrongful conviction

McHenry County leaders have closed the book on one of the state's most notable wrongful conviction cases from the 1990s. The McHenry County state's attorney's office recently reached a settlement with two of the county's insurers to pay some $700,000 in legal fees stemming from the wrongful conviction of Gary Gauger, of Richmond, for the 1993 murder of his parents. A jury convicted Gauger and he was sentenced to death, but an appellate court overturned the guilty verdict in 1996. Full story.

Bikers (and Santa) rally in Elburn for charity

Dressed as Santa Claus among a sea of black leather and denim, David Wyman was an obvious target yesterday. "I can't tell you how many photos I've been in today," the Katy, Texas, man said as he posed with another group of bikers. "But I don't pass up an opportunity when I can do something for the kids." Wyman, a member of LoneStarSantas.org, traveled to Elburn this weekend to help with the 28th annual DuKane A.B.A.T.E. Toy and Food Run. Full story.

Complete turnaround for Bears in Atlanta

The Bears beat the Falcons 27-13 yesterday behind Jay Cutler's most productive game as a Bear and the short-handed defense allowing the fewest points in the Marc Trestman era. Brandon Marshall had his first 100-yard game of the season, Alshon Jeffery had the second-longest reception of his career, and running back Matt Forte had his second straight double-digit reception day and ran for 2 touchdowns. The Bears' defense at times utilized three rookies and one first-year player and played without its top four linebackers but still allowed just 287 total yards, its best effort of the season. Spellman: First impressions of this year's Blackhawks

Daily Herald Blackhawks writer Mike Spellman offers readers some random thoughts, notes and tidbits after two regular-season games in his column for Monday's paper. "Few teams put on a pregame show quite like the Blackhawks. And the bigger the event, the better the production. Though a regular-season home opener can't come close to a playoff game, I think the production values Saturday night were the best I've seen yet. First of all, using the entire ice surface as a video screen is still a concept that kind of blows my mind." Spellman also wrote about rookie defenseman Trevor van Riemsdyk. "After playing just less than 12 minutes in his NHL debut - Thursday's 3-2 shootout win in Dallas - coach Joel Quenneville bumped his minutes a bit Saturday night, and the 23-year-old responded … again."
