St. Edward's Scully qualifies for girls golf state again

After shooting an 8 on the first hole of the Class A Watseka girls golf sectional at Shewami Country Club Saturday, St. Edward senior Ryann Scully had to be wondering if she'd be playing golf downstate next weekend or softball in a college exposure tournament in Elgin.

Don't put the golf clubs away just yet, Ryann.

Scully bounced back from the tough start to shoot an 84 and beat the cut by four strokes, qualifying for the IHSA state finals for the second straight year.

"After that first hole I was like, 'well, all right,' " she said, "but other than that I did great. I had a few 6s but I parred a lot of holes. My putting was spot on today and I picked up my irons. They were really working."

Scully knew the task would be a tough one.

"When I saw the schools there I knew it would be tough because I knew a lot of the girls from playing with them in other tournaments," she said. "I'm really happy with the way I played today."

Reed-Custer senior Sarah Maddox was the individual champion with a 2-over par 74.

Scully will play at Red Tail Run in Decatur next weekend, the same course she played at state last year when she shot 94-96-190 and tied for 70th place.

"I really do like that course and hopefully playing it last year will help me this year," she said.
