Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn and Republican Bruce Rauner continued their monthslong battle over taxes and the economy in their first televised debate, questioning each other's leadership skills and disagreeing sharply on the election's key issues. Hinsdale District 86 reaches deal with teachers to avoid strike

Just days before a possible strike, Hinsdale High School District 86 and its teachers union have reached a tentative contract agreement. Details of the agreement weren't released last night, and the contract must be ratified by both the union membership and the school board. "We are so pleased to make this joint announcement tonight, ending speculation about a potential strike," District 86 Superintendent Bruce Law said in a statement. Full story.

Bolingbrook teen in terrorism case called intelligent, normal

Portions of the court proceedings against a Bolingbrook teen accused of trying to travel abroad to join the Islamic State terrorist group should be closed to the public, federal prosecutors said yesterday. Meanwhile, the attorney for Mohammed Hamzah Khan, 19, called Khan an intelligent believer of Islam, and neighbors called him a normal teenager. Bolingbrook teen's lawyer: ISIS isn't a threat, so neither is my client

Tom Durkin says his Bolingbrook client's prosecution is a product of mass hysteria over a group that wasn't even on the radar a few months ago. "In a matter of weeks, ISIS has become the most dangerous group on the face of the earth because they beheaded a few people," he said. "I don't condone it. It's outrageous, but do you really think that we're not just playing right into their hands?" Full story.

Arlington Hts. park district center reopens Saturday after $6.4 million renovation

After a year of construction and $6.4 million in renovations, the new Arlington Heights Park District Camelot Park Community Center will reopen Saturday. The 18,522-square-foot building at 1005 E. Suffield Drive has a new, larger gymnasium with an elevated walking track, offices, updated fitness equipment and rooms for preschool and other activities, said Anita Pacheco, superintendent of marketing and communications. Acknowledging remorse, former Bears general manager Jerry Angelo said NFL teams didn't discipline players in "hundreds and hundreds" of domestic violence cases during his 30-year career, USA Today reported yesterday. Scrappy Royals resemble 2005 White Sox

Paul Konerko had a hunch about the Royals. After watching Kansas City clinch its first postseason berth since 1985 against the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field on the final weekend of the regular season, the retiring Konerko said the Royals were likely to be equally successful in October. "They have a great makeup," Konerko said. "That team has a lot of the same makeup of the team that we won the (2005) World Series with." Full story.
