Rauner releases tax returns: $61 million in 2013 income

Republican gubernatorial candidate Bruce Rauner on Friday released parts of his 2013 federal and state income tax returns, which showed that the multimillionaire and his wife, Diana, earned nearly $61 million last year. The Rauners paid $17 million in federal and state taxes. About $14.3 million of that went to the federal government and nearly $2.9 million to Illinois, for a combined tax rate of about 27.5 percent.

The Winnetka venture capitalist had been criticized by his opponent, Democratic Gov. Pat Quinn, for not disclosing detailed tax returns earlier in the campaign. And the Quinn campaign again criticized the late Friday release of just eight pages of returns, calling them "wholly insufficient" and saying they "raise more questions than answers."

The returns did not detail Rauner's sources of income. But they said the Rauners earned about $41.1 million in capital gains, which can come from financial investments or real estate; $6.3 million in taxable dividends; $4.2 million from other sources, such as royalties, partnerships and trusts; and about $7.9 million from other sources.

Earlier in the campaign, Rauner made public state and federal returns for 2010, 2011 and 2012. But none of them contain detailed schedules, forms that offer more information about Rauner's business dealings and how he made his wealth.

"What are his sources of income? What loopholes is he jumping through? Does he have any conflicts of interest in his finances? The voters don't know because Mr. Rauner is hiding this information from them," Quinn campaign spokesman Brooke Anderson said in a statement.

Rauner spokeswoman Lyndsey Walters dismissed the criticism as a "pathetic attack."

"Bruce has already disclosed every investment that does business in Illinois and pledged a blind trust if elected governor," Walters said.

The returns show the Rauners donated more than $5 million to charity. That includes $1 million to Red Cross relief efforts after the downstate Washington tornado.

"Diana and I are proud to be able to give back to the state we love by supporting community organizations and giving those in need a helping a hand," Rauner said.

Tax returns for Quinn - who releases his handwritten tax returns annually - show he made about $161,000 last year. Rauner's 2012 returns show the Winnetka businessman made $53 million that year.
