5 things to do before Polar Vortex grips us again

Fall fests are in full force, providing the perfect incentive to pack up the family and enjoy some time outdoors before the temps drop too low. This weekend offers a number of different possibilities, from St. Charles' Scarecrow Fest to historical cemetery tours in Naperville. Here are five options. Who ya gonna call?: Grab a proton pack and head to the Volo Auto Museum, 27582 Volo Village Road, Volo, to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the hit film “Ghostbusters.” Museum officials will unveil a restored “Ghostbusters” Ecto-1, costumed characters will pose for pictures and paranormal investigators from Gurnee-based Ghostland Society will talk about their work. In addition, each admission wristband purchased Saturday will be good that night for free entry to a double bill of “Ghostbusters” and “Ghostbusters II” at the McHenry Outdoor Theater, Lincoln and Chapel Hill roads, McHenry. Admission is $13.95 for adults, $8.95 for children ages 5 to 12 and free for children 4 and younger. www.volocars.com. Museum open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday; movies begin at 7:30 p.m.

Scarecrow fests: Celebrate scarecrows — and make your own — at the St. Charles Scarecrow Festival. More than 100 handcrafted scarecrows will be on display in Lincoln Park, Fourth and Main St. Event also features activity zones, a carnival midway and Autumn on the Fox Arts and Crafts Show. Free. More fall fun: Head to Mount Prospect Saturday for a day full of family-friendly fun — and an evening skewed more to the grown-ups. The Mount Prospect Fall Festival features pumpkins, crafts and entertainment, including magicians and stilt walkers, at Emerson Street and Busse Avenue. At 4, Oktoberfest takes over with German food, music and entertainment. downtownmountprospect.com. 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday for fall fest; 4 to 11 p.m. for Oktoberfest.

Dearly departed: “Meet” Naperville residents of the past at the Stories in Stone Cemetery Walk at the Naperville Cemetery. Groups of up to 15 guests depart from Naper Settlement at 523 S. Horsin' around: See performances by the Danada Equestrian Center's horses and the volunteer musical horseback drill team at the Danada Fall Festival Sunday at 3S507 Naperville Road, Wheaton.
