CLC Environmental Health and Safety program to hold info sessions

The career outlook and training required for positions in the growing environmental technician field will be discussed at free information sessions to be held in November, December and January at the College of Lake County's Grayslake campus, 19351 W. Washington St.

The sessions, focused on the college's new 10-course environmental health and safety certificate program, will be offered in Room T323 from 11 a.m. to noon: Nov. 4, Dec. 16 and Jan. 6.

The fast-track program was created with funding from a Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training (TAACCCT) grant. The certificate, geared especially to positions in the water quality industries, can be completed in 12 months. It prepares graduates for positions with annual salaries that range from $29,028 to $54, 811 (waste water technicians in the Chicago area).

CLC has the only program in Illinois offering industry certification in five areas: Environmental Regulations Awareness, Advanced Air Monitoring, Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) Generator, Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) and the Occupational Safety and Health (OSHA) Confined Space Entry.

The certificate prepares graduates to work as biological, chemical, environmental and occupational safety and health technicians, as well as water/wastewater treatment plant and system operators. Environmental technicians investigate sources of pollution, including those affecting health. Many work under the supervision of environmental scientists and specialists, who direct their work and evaluate their results. Five classes will be offered in spring semester; all held in the evening. This 30-credit-hour, fast-track certificate program can be completed in 12 months.

Spring semester students will take five evening courses, starting with a STEM bridge course (MET 299 Fundamentals for Environmental Professionals) that meets Jan. 12-16. The four other courses are: EHS 113 Hazardous Materials Regulations and EHS 115 Environmental Sampling Procedures on Mondays; EHS 111 Environmental Compliance on Wednesdays; and CHEM 140 Chemistry for a Changing World on Thursdays.

"The program gives students the knowledge and skills to pursue green jobs, which are the backbone of the clean energy economy movement the country has adopted," said LaMar Black, program coordinator in the Engineering, Math and Physical Sciences division.
