Marmion senior earns Eagle Scout award

Marmion Academy senior Conroy Unruh will be recognized for earning the highest advancement rank the Boy Scouts of America offers to Scouts, the Eagle Scout Award.

He is a member of the Three Fires Council Troop 3, and is one of approximately four percent of all Boy Scouts who achieve the Eagle rank, according to Scoutmaster Tim Jungels.

Unruh, the son of Brad and Cathy Unruh of Batavia, will receive the honor at a ceremony at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 12, at Johnson's Mound Forest Preserve in Elburn.

To earn the Eagle Scout rank, a Boy Scout must fulfill requirements in the areas of leadership, service, and outdoor skills. Each candidate must earn 21 merit badges and successfully complete a community-related service project to earn his Eagle.

Unruh completed 22 merit badges and organized a blood drive, recruited donors, and conducted the blood drive within his community. Conroy's goal was to collect 25 pints of blood. He carried out his project with the support of the Heartland Blood Centers in Aurora and succeeded with 26 pints of blood.

In Troop 3, Unruh has served as Librarian, Patrol Leader, Quarter Master, and Senior Patrol Leader. He was chosen to be a member in the Order of the Arrow. He was recognized as a Scout who best exemplifies the Scout Oath and Law in his daily life, as well as provides encouragement for others to live these ideals as well.

He was also awarded the 50-miler award for canoeing. Unruh has attended summer camp at Camp Freeland Leslie as well as the Welte Survival Campout. His high adventure trips include the Boundary Waters of Minnesota, Superior Hiking Trail, and the Maroon Bells 4 Pass Loop in Colorado.

Unruh is a member of Annunciation Church in Aurora and is a cantor and Eucharistic minister at Marmion Abbey. He is active in cross country, swimming, choir, fishing team and the school play at Marmion Academy in Aurora.
