Healthy eating highlights "Food Day" at Sherman Hospital

Elgin, Ill. - Healthy, affordable and sustainable food will be the focus of the annual "Food Day" celebration at Advocate Sherman Hospital on Oct. 23.

The event will include a farmers market with vendors made possible through a partnership with the Downtown Neighborhood Association of Elgin's Harvest Market. It also coincides with national Food Day, which aims to inspire people to change their diets and eat healthy, as well as push local, state and national entities to improve food policies.

Vendors taking part in the event include Breadsmith of St. Charles; Let's Spice It Up of Carpentersville; Windy Acres Crafts of Elgin; Troggs Hollow Farm of Poplar Grove; Sitka Salmon Shares of Galesburg; D&A Bee Yard of Carol Stream; and Bema & Pa's Products of Hoffman Estates.

Licensed dieticians will also be available to answer questions and provide healthy food recipes and samples. At the Sherman Café, chefs will cook items from the official Food Day cookbook and share the recipes.

Live music will be provided by members of the Elgin Symphony Orchestra, master gardeners will share gardening tips, and Food for Greater Elgin will discuss how residents can support the food pantry.

Participants will have the opportunity to win a gift card to Sherman Hospital's Tree House Gift Shop by participating in the recipe scavenger hunt.

"Food Day" will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the lower level of the hospital, located at 1425 N. Randall Road in Elgin.

The event is free and open to the public.
