Two charged in 2011 Aurora shooting

Two 21-year-old Aurora men have been charged with attempted murder and other felonies in an October 2011 shooting near East Aurora High School, according to Kane County court records.

Esteban Perez, of the 1100 block of Front Street, and Jose A. Becerra, of the 1300 block of Superior Street, were indicted this month on charges stemming from an Oct. 15, 2011, shooting on the 700 block of George Avenue, records show.

In addition to attempted murder, they are charged with discharging a firearm within 1,000 feet of a school.

Aurora Police spokesman Dan Ferrelli said Thursday he did not have any additional information regarding the shooting.

According to court records, Perez and Becerra are accused of shooting into a home on the 700 block of George, targeting a man who was 20 at the time.

Bail for Perez was set at $50,000; bail for Becerra was set at $750,000.

Both men were already being held at the Kane County jail on other felony charges.

Perez faces a minimum of 21 years in prison if convicted.

Becerra faces a minimum of 26 years in prison if he is convicted and prosecutors can prove he fired the gun.

Perez has been held at the jail since a July 2012 arrest on drug charges that came while he was free on bond after being charged with a residential burglary in October 2011, records show. Perez also was arrested on drug charges in September 2011, violating probation he received after he was caught shoplifting at a department store in Batavia, records show.

Becerra has been held at the jail since a September 2014 arrest from a traffic stop, records show. Becerra is accused of possession of a firearm by a gang member, possession of marijuana and resisting arrest for running from police, records show.

He received probation after a November 2010 incident in which he shot himself in the left leg, records show.

Becerra was sentenced to 18 months prison after pleading guilty in January 2013 to felony possession of 23 pills of generic Xanax stemming from an October 2012 arrest, records show. Prosecutors urged prison officials not to make Becerra a candidate for early release.

"He did not follow the rules of a gang specific probation and never left the gang," prosecutors wrote in court documents.

Becerra is next due in court Friday on weapons charges from his September arrest. No date was available for Perez and Becerra to face the attempted murder charges.
