Elk Grove Food 4 Less grocer plans final checkout next month

The Food 4 Less grocery store in Elk Grove Village is scheduled to close next month due to declining sales, officials said.

Located in the Mallard Crossing Shopping Center at Meacham and Nerge roads, the store "has been underperforming for quite some time," said Kendra Doyel, a spokeswoman for Kroger Co., which operates Food 4 Less grocers in the Chicago area, Indiana, Nevada and California.

"We had to make the difficult decision to close," Doyel said. "It's always a last resort and not one we take lightly."

About 50 employees were told last week that the store will close on or around Nov. 8. Doyel said they will be offered jobs at other Kroger-owned stores in the area.

The 56,600-square-foot Elk Grove store is average in size compared to other Food 4 Less locations. Since opening in 2005, the grocer has helped anchor the shopping plaza, along with a Walmart store.

What will replace it is unknown. Food 4 Less has leased the space from Oak Brook-based Inland Real Estate Corporation.

The firm's leasing agent didn't respond to requests for comment.
