Hanover Park woman dies after getting West Nile virus

A Hanover Park woman in her 40s has died of West Nile virus, officials from the DuPage County Health Department said yesterday. Her death last week is the county's first West Nile virus death of 2014 and the third reported this year in Illinois, officials said. The woman, who hasn't been identified, had other health issues, according to DuPage officials. Full story.

20-year-old Elgin man sent to hospital with multiple gunshot wounds

A 20-year-old Elgin man was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries last night after he was shot, police said. Elgin police and fire officials responded at about 10 p.m. to the area of Sherman Avenue and St. Charles Street for a report of a shooting. Officers arrived and found the man lying in a yard. Bicyclist seriously hurt after hit by car in Elgin

A 21-year-old Elgin man was sent to the hospital with life-threatening injuries last night after he was hit by a car while riding his bike, Elgin police said. The accident occurred Tuesday evening around 9 p.m. when the bicyclist was crossing Summit Street in the area of Hill Street. Full story.

Quinn, Rauner disagree on gun control

Supreme Court won't hear Calusinski appeal

The Illinois Supreme Court has denied a request to hear the appeal of a Carpentersville woman convicted in 2011 for killing a 16-month-old boy at a Lincolnshire day care. In a two-sentence statement, the state Supreme Court said it would not review the appeal petition for Melissa Calusinski in the Jan. 14, 2009, death of Benjamin Kingan of Deerfield. Full story.

3 juveniles arrested in Crystal Lake arson

Three juveniles were arrested earlier this month on charges they started a fire back in March that destroyed a Crystal Lake home, officials said. The home was destroyed on March 22, but the resident was not home at the time. No one was injured, but the estimated loss is $180,000, Crystal Lake police said. The home was later razed. Full story.

Sandwich man killed in Big Rock car crash

A 64-year-old man was killed yesterday morning in a single-vehicle crash near Big Rock. Gregory G. Oakes, 64, of Sandwich, was driving north in a Mitsubishi Eclipse on Granart Road at a high speed, according to the Kane County sheriff's office. Full story.
