Hersey secures share of East title

Senior Night proved to be a big hit for Hersey's girls volleyball team at the Ken Carter Gymnasium in Arlington Heights.

Providing some of the biggest hits were Liz Fuerst (7 kills), Caity Strozewski (6), Gabri Olhava (4) and Kelly Hill (3) as the Huskies posted a 26-24, 25-18 victory over visiting Wheeling.

Hersey (18-4, 8-0) clinched a tie for its 12th straight Mid-Suburban East crown under coach Nancy Lill.

"It was great to celebrate senior night and have all seven of our seniors get the job," Lill said referring to Joslyn Kerman, Kira Busse, Kaylie Jacobson, Courtney Stedman, Hill, Olhava and Strozewski.

Stedman handed out 20 assists while Paige Pannozo led the back row with 9 digs.

Olhava had 5 blocks and Strozewski 4.

Wheeling (10-12, 4-4) was led on attack by Deanna Kuzmanic (7 kills, 17 digs) and Domenica Montesin (4) as setter Sabrina Semeria handed out 9 assists with 14 digs. Alexa Laureano added 15 digs.

Palatine d. Barrington: Meg Angelaccio (7 kills) and Heather Holz (4 kills) led the attack for visiting Palatine (18-7, 6-2) in a 25-20, 25-15 victory.

Setter Sydney Christiansen handed out 15 assists while Jess Lundell served 2 aces.

Alyssa Kornberg came up with 7 digs and Claire Chaplinsky had 3 blocks.

Katie Clement and Megan Talbot each had 3 kills to lead the attack for Barrington (5-17, 2-6). Claudia Locked served 3 aces for the Fillies and Talbot 2.

Buffalo Grove d. Rolling Meadows: Host Buffalo Grove (14-8, 6-2) posted a 25-19 25-15 victory in the MSL East match.

Nora Rasche led the Mustangs (5-17, 1-8) with 4 kills while Caroline Barczak had 7 digs. Hannah Mickey and Rasche each had 6 digs.

Prospect d. Elk Grove: Prospect claimed back the 'golden coconut' trophy after eight years with a 25-22, 25-18 victory on Hawaiian night in Elk Grove.

"We were determined to change that this year," said first-year Knights coach Gabrielle Lovin. "We played well and are pushing hard at the end of this season. One day at a time, together we will grow."

Leading the Knights attack were Sammy Withey (7 kills), Catherine Sherwood (6 kills), Brenda Kendziera (5) and Mary Mazurek (3).

Teammates Michelle Haaning handed out 19 assists while Sarah Cutaia had 16 digs.

Amber Lindfors (5 kills, 1 block) and Tayler Merkel (3 kills 2 aces) led the attack for the Grens (5-16, 1-7) while Alex Masnica and Mary Cronin each had 4 assists. O'Rayn McAvoy made 2 blocks and Jenny Banak recorded 16 digs.

Conant d. Hoffman Estates: DeeDee Durr had 4 kills while Jorie Wachal, Katie Lomas and Rachel Delanois each had 3 to lead the attack for visiting Conant in a 25-12, 25-15 triumph.

Dhara Patel had 17 digs and setter Elisa Ambrose handed out 16 assists for the Cougars (10-13, 3-5).

Hoffman (3-23, 0-8) was led on attack by Kelsey Warford with 5 kills while Marielle Lugo and Kaitlyn Imburgia each had 2. Imburgia also had 5 digs and 1 block.

Leyden d. Addison Trail: Visiting Leyden (12-14, 3-2) posted a 25-23, 25-20 victory in the West Suburban Gold as junior outside hitter Emily Steininger put down 10 kills and sophomore setter Autumn McGee had 8 kills, 20 assists and 4 aces.
