Kids can learn how to fish with Izaak Walton League

Bring the kids to the Izaak Walton Hanover Township Center and Lodge for a fishing lesson at 6 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 7. This is free to the public.

Jeff Hamby, owner of SS Minnows Bait Shop on Route 31 in South Elgin, and Mitch Ryko from Algonquin will demonstrate how to catch fish from the shores of the Fox River.

Both of these anglers grew up on the river. Hamby sells live bait and gives advice from his years of living on the river. Ryko also grew up on the river and operated a bait shop in Algonquin for 31 years. He started selling bait from his house at the age of 9 and has been doing so for 60 years.

He also taught kids from the Randall Oaks Golf Course area in Algonquin.

Learn how to rig lines using sinkers, bobbers and bait. Learn how to entice the fish to try your bait.
