Grown-ups can find treasure at Pirates of the Commons

As you're scrambling to create Halloween costumes for your kids this year, don't forget to put one together for yourself for the second annual Algonquin Commons Pirates of the Commons Scavenger Hunt.

Participants and organizers had so much fun with the Halloween-themed event last year that mall representatives decided to host the adults-only event again this year, said Wendy Mustard of Gilmore Marketing Concepts, which does public relations and marketing for Algonquin Commons.

This year's Pirates of the Commons will be from 6 to 10 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 28.

The mall has partnered with City Hunt to add more excitement to the event, which will send hunters to the various eateries at the commons searching for clues and items.

The finds will be based on points, and winners will receive Algonquin Commons gift cards.

Participants will be using Instagram and other social media sites to tag scavenger hunt items throughout the event, Mustard said.

"We are very excited about the new hunt additions, and with the fabulous eateries and their enthusiasm from last year, we can only imagine how fun this year will be," she said.

Only 300 people can participate, with participants going out in groups of four to eight. The event sold out last year.

The cost is $20 per person, and everyone receives a T-shirt and swag bag full of goodies from Algonquin Commons merchants. The price also includes food and drinks during the hunt.

There will be a first prize of a $75 Algonquin Commons gift card, awarded per person on the winning team; a second prize of a $50 gift card; and a third prize of a $25 gift card.

There also will be raffle prizes, costume prizes and loser prizes awarded during the night, Mustard said.

Registration for the event can be found at www.piratesofthecommons.com.

Participants must be 21 or older to participate. Each team must also have one smartphone with the capabilities of posting to Instagram, Facebook and Twitter. They also need to wear costumes to join in on the fun.
