Gain insight to serving in public sector from mayors

Do you have skills, wisdom or experience that might be an asset to your community? If you've ever considered serving on a public board or committee, come to the upcoming Schaumburg Township District Library program, "So You're Interested in Public Service?" from 7 to 8:30 p.m., Tuesday, Oct. 7, in the Rasmussen South Room.

Hosted by former library board president Bob Lyons, this informative session will include Hoffman Estates Mayor Bill McLeod and Hanover Park Mayor Rod Craig. All are welcome to come and gain insight on serving in the public sector. Examples of such service include school, park, library, village and township boards and committees, among other capacities. In addition to receiving information presented verbally and through written handouts, attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions of the mayors and Lyons, all of whom have decades of public service experience.

Lyons explained that while all three levels of local government - federal, state and local - play important roles, it is the local government that "is most important for the quality of our lives."

"It is also the one that is easiest for us to influence and become a part of," Lyons said. "I hope those interested in giving back and making a difference in the lives of others will join us to learn what they can do on the local level."

Lyons said he and the mayors will provide their perspectives on public service, while also addressing issues including the types of background or experience necessary, optimal personality traits, time management, and expectations from fellow public servants as well as the people being served. Additionally, they will discuss and answer questions about the election process, from the basics to challenges to complications.

"It's important to remember you don't have to run for office to get involved in local government," Lyons said. "There are plenty of committees that really need people, and you don't have to compete for most of those positions. If you can bring something to the table - skills or experience from a vocation or avocation - even better."

If you feel the nudge to serve your community on a public board, don't miss this great opportunity to get the insider's scoop on what it's all about. Come to "So You're Interested in Public Service?" to learn more, get your questions answered, and figure out if you're ready to head down the public service path.
