Huntley claims 3rd FVC title in 4 years

HARVARD - After finishing second to Jacobs in last year's Fox Valley Conference boys golf tournament, Huntley coach Jim Rolando was looking for his team to climb that one step higher in this year's meet.

The Red Raiders got the job done.

Led by a 73 from Jake Grabner and a 75 from Trent Craig, Huntley placed first with a score of 312 at Thursday's FVC meet hosted by McHenry and held at Oak Grove Golf Course.

'It was redemption for us after last year," said Rolando. "We played well but Jacobs was just better. It is an awesome feeling. I am just excited for our guys. They deserve this."

Huntley, winners of 3 of the last 4 conference meets, was led by Grabner, who shot a 34 on the front 9 along with a 39 on the back. Grabner was second overall behind Prairie Ridge's Ethan Farnum, who shot a medalist round of 72.

"The course is crazy hard," said Grabner. "I played conservative because it was so windy. My driver, hybrid and 3 wood were all working for me."

After Craig, Jake Bowser carded an 81 and Danny Spoeth scored 83 for the Red Raiders.

Jacobs was second with a score of 317.

Justin Lenzini paced the Golden Eagles with a 75, Billy Walker shot a 79 and Joe Addanti came into the clubhouse with an 81.

"We needed another 70 or two to win conference," said Jacobs coach Gary Conrad. "But overall the kids played well especially Justin and Billy. We are now just looking forward to the regionals next week."

Cary-Grove was fourth with a score of 327. The Trojans had two players In the 70s with Pete Kalamaras scoring a 78 and Keaton May a 79. Kyle Irlbacker had an 84 and Mike Altendorf scored an 86 to round out the card for the Trojans.
