Attempted armed robbery thwarted in Wheeling

Wheeling police are investigating the attempted armed robbery of a store in Wheeling Wednesday afternoon.

A man armed with a knife confronted the store clerk at Amigo Mundo Store, 14 W. Dundee Road, and demanded money at about 3:10 p.m., according to police. A struggle ensued between the clerk and the robber, after which the robber fled.

He ran south across Dundee Road toward two District 21 schools - Walt Whitman Elementary and Holmes Middle School - causing both to be put on a soft lockdown while a search was conducted.

The man was not located, the store clerk was uninjured, and no money was taken.

The man, who was wearing dark clothing and had his face covered by a partial mask, was described as tall with a thin build, 20 to 25 years old, with dark hair. His race was unknown.
