Darch to serve as Barrington Area CROP Walk grand marshal

The Barrington Area CROP Hunger Walk Committee announced that Barrington Village President, Karen Darch, has been named grand marshal for the 32nd anniversary of this event which raises funds for people in need in this area and around the world.

A 29-year resident of Barrington, Darch has been involved in village government since 1995, serving as president since 2005. Being involved in the community and volunteering is an early lesson she learned from her parents. As her six children progressed through Barrington schools, she found many volunteer opportunities. She has been involved with the Junior Womens' Club, St. Anne school, PTO, and parish volunteer activities. She has been a co-volunteer at the BACOA lunch program with seniors and has helped with meals for PADS.

Darch is excited to be involved with the Healthier Barrington Coalition, as it brings social services, government, schools, libraries, and more together, assessing community needs. She served on the founding board of Samaritan Counseling Center and is a current board member of Barrington LEADS. She has certainly heeded her parents' teaching: "giving back is one of those important values."

She found inspiration in Church Women United, from which began Barrington Giving Day. Many of those same women were involved also with the CROP Walk. Over the years, she has enjoyed following the CROP Walk - by walking, sponsoring, contributing and sending off the walkers. She is excited "to watch churches work together for a common purpose - feeding people."

The Barrington Area CROP Walk is an annual community hunger education and fundraising event sponsored by Church World Service, an international ecumenical relief, development and refugee resettlement agency providing assistance in the United States and around the world. The walk takes place throughout the Village of Barrington, beginning at St. Paul United Church of Christ, 401 E. Main Street, with registration at 12:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 19; the walk begins at 1 p.m.

Twenty-five percent of all funds raised in Barrington stays in the area benefiting the Northern Illinois Food Bank, the FISH Food Pantry, Carpentersville, BACOA Meals With Wheels, Wauconda-Island Lake Food Pantry, Project HOPE, Palatine Township Food Pantry, the People in Need program of the Barrington Area Ministerial Association, and Barrington Giving Day.
