Local surgeon wins international awards for best surgical video contributions

On Sept. 12, Jonathan Y. Song, M.D. of TLC Medical Group won multiple awards at this year's Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons meeting which was held in Las Vegas.

The SLS is a multi-specialty minimally invasive surgical society and is comprised of many national and international members.

Dr. Song won the coveted Carl J. Levinson Award for Best Surgical Video in the field of gynecologic surgery, as well as the Carl J. Levinson Award for Best Overall Minimally Invasive Surgical Video.

Both surgeries involved removing very large fibroid tumors along with uterine reconstruction which allowed young patients to preserve their uterus who were able to conceive 3-6 months later.

These tumors weighed over 2,300 grams (normal weight of an entire uterus weighs 60-80 grams). They were removed through four tiny puncture incisions with the aid of a video camera (laparoscopy) inserted through the patient's belly button, thus providing cosmetically small, pleasing scars with just a two-week recovery as opposed to eight weeks with a traditional surgery where large abdominal incisions are made.

Dr. Jonathan Song is in private practice in St. Charles and is one of three physicians who work at TLC Medical Group, S.C. along with Drs. Gina Song and Kathy Seskiewicz.

Dr. Song has also won first place at the 2009 American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists Meeting for his work for Alternatives to Hysterectomy, as well as the IRCAD award from Strasbourg, France for his work in Laparoscopic Tubal Re-anastomosis for patients who desired a tubal reversal.

He is currently the active chair of the Robotics Surgery program at Cadence Delnor campus, and is an assistant professor at Rush University Medical Center, Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. We are fortunate that world-caliber minimally invasive surgical care is available right here in St. Charles.
