No injuries as van hits two unoccupied state trooper vehicles

No one was injured but two state police vehicles were totaled Wednesday morning after a crash on the Veteran's Memorial Tollway, authorities said.

The state police cars were parked in the southbound lanes of I-355 blocking a previous accident with emergency lights activated near Boughton Road in Bolingbrook when they were hit from behind by a white cargo van at 5:58 a.m., said Sgt. Paul Carlos of Illinois State Police District 15.

Carlos said preliminary indications are the New Lenox man driving the van may have fallen asleep at the wheel. Authorities said there are no indications drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash or that the driver was on a cellphone or texting.

Carlos said the officers were not in their vehicles at the time.

After striking the vehicles, the van went through a guardrail and came to a stop near some trees on a grassy median.

The accident remains under investigation, authorities said, and no citations had been issued as of early Wednesday evening.
