Fire at scrap metal facility in Elgin

Nobody was injured in a scrap metal fire Wednesday afternoon in Elgin, fire officials said.

The fire happened at about 1:30 p.m. at the Acme Refining Scrap Iron Co., 1255 Gifford Road, apparently in the course of everyday business, firefighters said in a news release.

The fire was contained to the west side of the property. Acme workers helped fight the blaze by breaking up the large scrap metal pile with heavy machinery. Pingree Grove, Bartlett and South Elgin fire departments also assisted.

No injuries were reported, and the fire is no longer under investigation, officials said.
