Village Theatre Guild to stage 'Grace & Glorie'

Glen Ellyn's Village Theatre Guild will present the comedy/drama "Grace & Glorie" weekends, Oct. 17 to Nov. 8, at its stage near the northwest corner of Park Boulevard and Butterfield Road in Glen Ellyn.

Written by Tom Ziefler, the play tells the story of 90-year-old Grace, who has checked herself out of the hospital to die at home, and Glorie, the young hospice volunteer who attempts to care for her cantankerous patient.

Set in a rustic cottage in the Blue Ridge Mountains, this clash of disparate personalities is as much comedy as drama. After success off-Broadway in 1996, the play later was adapted for television by Hallmark Hall of Fame.

Liliana Mitchell of Chicago portrays the feisty, illiterate Grace, who doesn't understand why a city-bred do-gooder has come into her life at the very end.

Lisa Dolnics of Naperville plays the well-meaning Glorie, who discovers Grace's lack of education belies a lifetime of homespun wisdom. As each discovers the personal hardships faced by the other, a close bond develops.

"This is a play about how people connect to each other in spite of fundamental differences," said Director Charles Bernstein of Wheaton.

"As they stumble through the process of getting to know each other, they generate some very funny moments. I think there will be lots of laughs in this production, but we are not trying to play this for laughs. The humor comes through the honest interaction between the characters."

Performances are at 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 3 p.m. Sundays. Tickets are $18. For reservations, call (630) 469-8230 or visit www.VillageTheatreGuild.org.
