Springfield man gets 12 years for hiding gun

SPRINGFIELD - A Springfield man has been sentenced to 12 years in prison after admitting he tried to hide a gun used in a fatal shooting.

The State Journal-Register reports 23-year-old Richard Lawuary pleaded guilty in August to obstructing justice and unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon. A jury had been selected and two prosecution witnesses had testified at his trial.

Lawuary will serve the sentence consecutively to a previous 6 ½-year sentence for violating probation.

He was charged with trying to hide a gun that police say another man used to kill 38-year-old Charles Rice Jr. in 2013. Deputies found the gun in a stove next to a window through which Lawuary had tried to escape.
