Schaumburg man hit, killed by taxi on Higgins Road

A 20-year-old Schaumburg man is dead after being hit by a taxi on Higgins Road over the weekend.

Edi Carreto-Silva was a passenger in a car driving on Higgins east of Interstate 290 in Schaumburg about 1:24 a.m. Sunday when the car stopped in a lane of traffic not at an intersection, said Illinois State Trooper Aldo Schumann.

Carreto-Silva got out of the car and crossed two lanes of traffic to urinate on the side of the road, Schumann said. When he finished and was crossing the two lanes of traffic to get back to the vehicle he was struck by a taxi van.

He was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead shortly after 2 a.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner.

The taxi stayed on the scene after the accident, police said. No one has been cited in the crash.

Schumann said that as far as police know, Carreto-Silva was not intoxicated at the time of the accident.

"It's kind of a freak accident," Schumann said. "I think they figured because it was late, no one would be around."
