Former Wheaton North Booster president gets jail, probation

The former Wheaton North High School Booster Club president accused of stealing nearly $11,000 from the organization was sentenced Monday to a combination of jail time and probation.

Dorothy "Dee" Horky, 58, of Winfield, was sentenced to 75 days in jail, two years of probation and was ordered to undergo any psychological evaluations deemed necessary by probation.

Judge Daniel Guerin said he believes Horky was genuinely remorseful for her crimes and acknowledged she has paid full restitution, but said this was not a one-time crime.

Horky pleaded guilty to taking 50 unauthorized cash advances totaling $10,985.53 between July and November 2012. She also made 26 withdrawals, totaling $9,838.32, from a club bank account that she had access to and transferred that money to pay for the cash advances she had taken on the credit card.

Guerin said Horky cited financial stressors as her motivation for committing the crime and spent the money on food, gas and medical expenses.

"I believe many others in the community are dealing with the same kinds of financial stressors but they are not committing thefts of $10,000," Guerin said. "Those parents who donated to the booster club surely had competing demands for their money and the defendant had a responsibility to see that that money was handled properly."

Horky's attorney, Tim Martin, sought a sentence of probation and community service for Horky.

Horky's sentencing hearing previously was delayed three times when she failed to appear for court. Following her most recent absence from court, Horky was taken for mental health treatment at Central DuPage Hospital.

Horky will receive credit for the 21 days she has spent in custody, meaning she will be released to probation in 16 days after serving half of her sentence.
