Cubs piece it together in victory over Brewers
MILWAUKEE - Javier Baez had 3 singles and 2 RBI Friday night as the Cubs beat the Milwaukee Brewers 6-4 at Miller Park. The contact was an encouraging sign for Baez, who entered the game with 90 strikeouts in 215 plate appearances.
The Cubs pieced together their pitching. Rookie left-hander Eric Jokisch made his first major-league start and lasted 4 innings, giving up 3 hits and 2 runs, 1 earned. Wildness hurt Jokisch, who walked four and fell behind all but two batters he faced.
A parade of pitchers followed Jokisch: Dan Straily, Justin Grimm, Neil Ramirez, Pedro Strop and Hector Rondon.
The Cubs broke on top 1-0 in the first inning when Chris Coghlan led off the game with his ninth homer of the season. After the Brewers tied it in the second, Coghlan opened the third with a double and came home on Baez's single. An RBI groundout by Jorge Soler later in the inning made it 3-1.
The Brewers scored a run in the bottom of the inning. The Cubs got 2 more in the fifth, on a run-scoring single by Baez followed by an RBI double off the bat of Anthony Rizzo.
