Package that caused McDonald's evacuation in Oak Brook declared safe

An evacuation of the McDonald's Plaza building in Oak Brook was lifted about 1 p.m. Friday after a package deemed suspicious by security personnel was determined not to be a threat.

Security guards who found the package in the mailroom at 2111 McDonalds Drive evacuated the building at 10:42 a.m. and called 911, Oak Brook police officer George Peterson said.

The DuPage County bomb squad responded along with Oak Brook police and firefighters to investigate the package, which McDonald's officials said contained a digital media player.

McDonald's officials and police declined to say to whom the package was addressed.

Roughly 1,300 people usually work at the building, but McDonald's spokeswoman Heidi Barker said Friday was the last day of a "summer schedule" in which workers are allowed to leave at 1 p.m. Barker said the company did not know how many people were evacuated.

Those who did leave the building Friday morning did not return later even though the package was found to be safe and legitimate.
